Schaerff and Brother 1857 Map
These bone artifacts represent the remains of a fairly expensive parasol or umbrella. The bone handle was ornately carved. The turned bone tips were protective ends for the umbrella arms or "ribs."
Detail of a portion of the Missouri Bottom and adjacent uplands from the 1857 New Topographical Map of St. Louis County, Illinois (Schaerff and Brother 1857). This map indicates only two structures on the Pierre Chouteau land grant (outlined in green) at this time--neither of which corresponds to the location of the Lorain Site. The location of the Lorain Site (circled in red) is indicated as forested bottom lands well removed from any roadways.
Distribution of Total Artifacts from the surface of the Lorain Site superimposed over subsurface features. As this figure notes, this was a relatively small, low-density scatter of artifacts.
