Although archaeological research has contributed dramatically to our understanding of the recent past, the results of this research (much of which is being conducted by CRM firms and often referred to as "gray literature") is poorly disseminated and printed in small runs that is not accessible to other researchers, let alone the general public. This web site is an effort by Fever River Research to make available, to both the professional archaeological community and the citizens of the State of Illinois, the results of our firm's 25-plus years of archaeological research. |

What is
Archaeology? Archaeology is a sub-discipline of anthropology that studies past human behavior through its discarded and/or remnant material culture. Although archaeology is often perceived as the study of "artifacts" excavated from the ground, it is the study of people and their adaptation to the environment in which they live (their culture). It is through the study of the people's material culture (artifacts), and the context of those artifacts, that we learn about the lifeways of these people.
