In
1996, Fever River Research conducted an architectural survey of the historic Enos Park Neighborhood in Springfield, Illinois. This project represented one
component of the City of Springfield’s Historic Sites Commission’s long-term
objective of surveying the entire one-square mile area comprising the historic
core of the community. The Enos Park Neighborhood is located directly north of
the central business district in Springfield and extends to North Grand Avenue.
During the middle-to-late nineteenth century, this area represented one of the
most prestigious residential neighborhoods in Springfield and was distinguished
by its fine Italianate and Queen Anne-style homes. Several of the earlier
middleclass “flats” to be constructed in Springfield also were located here.
During the project, Fever River Research documented 559 buildings, representing
a wide range of architectural styles and building forms constructed over a
100-year period (circa 1845-1945). The survey and documentation of these
structures resulted in a much better understanding of the architectural history
of Springfield and identified a number of properties meriting National Register
and/or local landmark status. |
