Location of N.C. Hawley's coal mines in rural Cincinnati Township, as illustrated by county atlases published in 1891 Tazewell County, Illinois. Hawley's coal mines were located at the end of a rail spur adjacent to the Illinois River bluff line. Some of the buildings illustrated at the mine likely represent workers' housing. This particular property was not the one studied in the project, but rather represents a good example of an earlier generation of mine with an associated company town (preceding the Crescent Mine in date).
Lithograph of the "Coal Mines of Norman Hawley, Section 28, Cincinnati Township. Tazewell County, Illinois." This mine appears to have been located at the Hawley farmstead. As no headframes are obvious in this illustration, the mine appears to have been a drift or slope entry. The engine house is evident by the smoke stack that is belching dark smoke. In contrast, the tall chimney in the foreground probably represents a furnace shaft. Note the wagon scales adjacent to the furnace stack. Coal from this mine was hauled in horse drawn ore carts over a rail spur to the Decatur Branch of the Toledo, Wabash and Western Railroad line.
A 1905 United States Geological Survey topographical map of the Peoria Quadrangle showing the location of Crescent Mine No. 2 and associated air shaft. No improvements are depicted at either site. The small coal town associated with Groveland Coal Mine No. 1 also is indicated.
Updated map of the Crescent Mine, drawn in 1929, showing the main surface complex of the mine and workers’ housing. The darkened squares that are numbered represent the housing and store. The underground workings also are shown.
View of the south elevation of the fan engine house. The building was built against a hillside and was entered through a wide doorway on this side. The doorway (shown at center) is flanked by two windows.
